Introduction

They snuck up on the 3 ships, the Dartmouth, Beaver, and Eleanor,
dressed as Indians hoping not to be caught, but most importantly,
for success. The Boston Tea Party was an important event in history. It
was the first act of rebellion against the British. It took a lot of hard
work and planning. It took place in Boston, Massachusetts on
December 16, 1773. Boston was a very important place at this time.
It was in one of the original 13 colonies, Massachusetts, from
1607- 1778. There are a lot of important things about the event that
shows how the colonists dislike British control. The Boston Tea party
was one of the main battles/events that started up the American
Revolutionary War.  There is a lot of history to know about the Boston
Tea Party.

                                     TIMELINE

Chapter 1:
Why It Started

The Boston tea party happened because King George III started putting
taxes on tea and only allowed the colonists to buy tea from the
British-owned East Indian Trading Company. A lot of people bought
tea so the King thought it was a good way to get extra money. The
colonists did not like that because they did not know what the king
was going to do with their taxes.  They thought it was an example of
taxation without representation. That means that the colonists did not
have any say in what the king did with their money.  They didn’t have
any say because they were not a part of the British Parliament. The
British Parliament is the law making part of the British government.
Every day or two, ships came into the Boston Harbor to give tea to
Boston. The colonists unloaded the tea from the ships and paid for
the tea, which included a tax. The colonists got really angry with the
taxes on the tea and started protesting. This was a big problem in
Boston during this time period.

Chapter 2
What Happens Next?

People refused to buy English tea due to the taxes and bought
tax-free, black tea from Holland, while others just stopped buying tea
altogether. Eventually, a secret group of colonists formed and called
themselves the Sons of Liberty. They formed this group to fight against
taxation. The Sons of Liberty decided that they were going to ban tea
from their harbor due to taxation without representation. They
wanted to send tea back to England but the tea agents, who sold and
delivered the tea, refused to take it back. The colonists were so mad
that they attacked a tea agent’s house! Each day, the Patriots (colonists)
became more and more angry.

Chapter 3
An Idea
The colonists were so mad at the British. At a town meeting in
November of 1773, Samuel Adams, the founder of the Sons of Liberty,
stood up and said to the colonists,”It is yet another example of
taxation without representation.” That means the colonist have no say
in what the King does with their taxes. Everyone agreed with him.
After that, there was a lot of shouting and protesting. Then, another
townsperson got up to say, ”Rather let the tea come overboard, could
we not throw it overboard?” The townspeople responded,” Yes! Into
the water! Into the water with the tea!” And then a plan was hatched.

Chapter 4
The Plan

After those awesome speeches in Boston, a plan hatched. The plan
was that one night, when the tea comes in from England, they were
going to dress up as Indians (the people who brought the tea over
were Indians). The Patriots, led by the Sons of Liberty, were going to
get on the ship and throw the tea overboard. The 3 ships that they
were doing it on were called Dartmouth, Beaver, and Eleanor. The
Patriots were going to meet at Ebnezer Stevens’  house which was
across from the Old South Church. After Ebenezer’s house they were
going to head to the 3 ships from there.

Chapter 5
It’s Time

They were getting ready to head up to the Beaver, Dartmouth, and
Eleanor. They formed into groups to go on different ships. Some
sailors  who were on the ship did not mind that the Rebels (another
word for Patriots) were boarding the ship. They just thought that they
were part of their crew. Then, suddenly their captain blocked their way.

Ebenezer Stevens said to the captain “Sir, order your men to open
the hatchways and hand us the hoisting tackle and ropes. Do what you
were told and no harm will come.”

The captain replied with, ”What do you intend to do?”

“It is the tea that we want, and it is the tea we’ll have. Now do as I
have said. Then get below.”

They ran up on the ships and started throwing tea off the ships. And in
total, 342 chests of tea and 92,000 pounds of tea were thrown off the
Beaver, Dartmouth, and Eleanor one December night.

Chapter 6
Results

The King was furious that the Patriots threw about 46 tons of tea into the
water. But, when Boston refused to pay for the $1,700,000 price of the tea
they threw into the water early December, the King was even more furious.
The King shut down the harbor. He said he would keep the harbor shut
down until the Patriots paid for the tea. The harbor started to smell really
bad because of the tea, so the Patriots decided they had to pay for the tea.

Conclusion

The Boston Tea Party was an important event in American history because
the colonists stood up to the British King. They threw 342 chests of tea off
of three ships in the Boston Harbor to protest taxation without
representation. This led up to the American Revolutionary War, which freed
the colonies from Great Britain. The Revolution went on from 1775 through
1783. Now these colonies are free and won independence from great
Britain. It all started up from this rebellious act, the Boston Tea Party.
