Punishments

Did you know that in colonial times people were put in the pillory for
being guilty of a practical joke! There were a lot of school punishments
then that are very different compared to the ones we have now. There
were also many different punishments for breaking the law that in my
opinion some of them are unreasonable. In church there were some very
strange punishments compared to the very few ones we have now.  

School Punishments

There were a lot of punishments in school like “Bite Finger Baby.”
This punishment was used for when the teacher caught a student biting
their fingers. It was a card that said “Bite Finger Baby” this card would
go around the kid who bit their fingers neck. Another punishment in
school was the “Whispering sticks.” These whispering sticks were used
to punish the kids in class who got caught whispering to their friends
while the teacher was talking or when they were in session. The way
you used these whispering sticks is that you put a kind of sticks in your
mouth a certain way, then it stops you from talking or whispering in class.

Law Punishments

There were lots of punishments for breaking the law or if you just did
something bad. An example of a law is stealing grapes or stealing
anything, spying, murder and hitting parents could result to being hung,
branded or even put in the pillory. Branded is a punishment that is used
for when anyone committees to any crime. Branded is to burn a “B”
on someone's hand, (B=burglary) so someone in town could see that
someone has committed crime or not.  

Being put in the pillory is a block of would with three holes in it, one for
the head and two for the hands. The person who was guilty of crime
would go in the pillory in front of the whole town and stay there for a
day maybe a week. All the other people in town would throw their
rotten food at the person and say rude, cruel, and mean things about them.

Being hung was a very big thing people did in colonial times. Whenever
a colonist got hung they would do it in front of the whole town and do
for horrible reasons. The people in colonial times would hang people if
they stole grapes, hit their parents, got caught spying, and murdered
someone.

Conclusion

In conclusion colonial days punishments are very horrible.
Who would punish people for biting their own nails,
crazy!

Colonial times was horrible, the laws were horrible, and so
were the school punishments. Do you believe that they're
