Introduction

Back in colonial times girls only went to school for a couple years boys also
had more education. Now a days girls and boys have the same amount of
education. In my first chapter I will talk, about what schools kids went to in
colonial times. In my second chapter I wrote about, the punishments that
happened if you did not behave in school in colonial times. My last chapter
is about, what school books they used in colonial times.

Chapter 1
What Schools Did They Go To In Colonial Times?

Dame school was a girls only school. Dame was also another name for
women. Dame school was at the teachers house. Dame school taught girls to
read , write , and do simple Mathematics. They used a special book to study
in called a Hornbook.  Some sources said that Boys and girls went to dame
school and some said only girls went. The College Of William And Mary was
boys only school. It was located in Williamsburg, Virginia At the end of
Williamsburg's Main Street. The school was named after  King William III
and Queen Mary II of England. They gave the order to start the school in
1693. The school included a grammar school for boys ages 12 to 15 learned
reading, writing , and arithmetic. Older boys could study to become priests
in the church of England. In the 1700s about 100 boys attended William and
Mary every year. Many famous people studied there four U.S.  presidents
attended this school George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Monroe,
and John Tyler.

Chapter 2
What Punishments Did Kids Get In School?

In Colonial schools if you didn't behave you would have punishments. There
are lots of punishments i am sure these are just some of them. If you did not
know your lessons you were called a dunce you had to sit on the dunce stool
in the back of the room and wear a dunce cap. Sometimes you had to wear
leather eyeglass frames. If you whispered to a friend you had to wear
wooden whispering sticks in your mouth. Also if you did not pay attention in
class you had to wear a cad around your neck that said idle boy. If you were
caught biting your nails you were called a bite finger baby. Some punishment
hurt your feelings and some made you feel embarrassed and some just hurt.
I wonder what happened when a student did not come to class?

Chapter 3
What School Supplies Do You Use In School?

In Dame school they use a special type of book
called a horn book. It was not a real book with pages that
turn. It is a piece of wood with a printed page on each side
The horn boo got its name from the this sheet of horn that
covered the page. You could see right through the horn. As
soon as the children learned to read and write everything
that was on the horn book they were finished with dame
school. Older children used a book called New England
Primer. I realized that they only used school books no
school supplies.

Conclusion

Now you have read lots about colonial schools you know what types of
schools they went to and, what punishments they got when they were bad,
also what school books they would use. You know that in dame school they
didn’t use real books. Have you ever wondered what it would be like if that
was your school?
