 INTRODUCTION

A long time ago, everyone started to make colonies in the
Americas. This is the story of one of England's colonies. There
were many hardships and,in my opinion, it was not the best
decision. In this report, you will learn about Walter Raleigh
and the queen in chapter 1, the relationship the explorers had
with the Indians in chapter 2, how mean Simon Fernandez
was in chapter 3, the lost colony in chapter 4, and the fate of
Raleigh in the conclusion. Whether they survived or not, well,
you’ll just have to wait and see.

                 CHAPTER 1
                             Queen’s Pet!

In the 1580’s, everyone wanted a piece of the “New World,
”including England. The New World was the Americas
and to  everyone around the globe, the perfect place to
expand their kingdom. Queen Elizabeth of England
wanted a chunk; so she told Walter Raleigh to check it
out.

Walter Raleigh was a favorite of the queen, because he
made her feel queenly. One day they were strolling
through the royal garden when they came across a mud
puddle. Raleigh took off his magnificent coat and placed
it over the puddle for the queen to walk across. The coat
was ruined, but the queen’s feet had stayed dry.

If you make the queen feel like a queen, she will
most likely give you whatever you want.

Raleigh was delighted and sent Philip Armadas and
Arthur  Barlowe to scope out the New World. When they
returned, they told Elizabeth what had happened to them.
The natives were friendly and very rich. Some even had
gold headdresses. They had been invited to a feast. The
women washed their clothes and then dressed them again.

“Where in England would we get such treatment?” they
asked. Elizabeth called at once for Raleigh and knighted
him immediately for this amazing discovery. Walter
Raleigh had become Sir Walter Raleigh. She asked him to
find a good spot for a colony. “Of course, your highness,”
he replied and started gathering explorers to find the
perfect place for his new colony.

                          CHAPTER 2

              Wrath Of The Silver Cup

He got John White, a painter, and Thomas Harriot, a
writer,to go. Before they left, they decided what to do if
they came across hostile Indians. They would smite them.
They boarded a ship and set out for what is now Virginia.
When they arrived, the Indians were waiting for them.
They didn’t look very rich, and none of them had any gold
headdresses. The colonists had come looking for treasure,
but so had the Indians. They saw a small silver cup and
stole it when no one was looking. The explorers didn’t
notice until someone pointed out it was gone. They  were
furious. The cup hadn’t been worth much, but the fact
that it had been stolen enraged them. They marched right
down to the Indian village and demanded the return of
the cup.

“What cup?”asked the Indians. These lies made the
explorers even angrier. They decided to smite them, hip
and thigh. Hip and thigh, they burned their houses. Hip
and thigh, they destroyed their crops.

Be extra nice to the explorers.
                               They can get nasty!

The explorers quickly realized that burning the Indian’s
village was a bad idea. The Indians were very reluctant to
share with the colonists. The colonists were starving. One day,
Sir Richard Grenville left for England, promising to come
back with food. As soon as he left, a man named Ralph Lane
decided to go exploring with his men. He divided the men
into two groups. He, twenty men, and a dog went up the
Roanoke River looking for a copper mine. But when they
returned, they had found nothing of value. The other group
went to the Chesapeake bay area and said it would be a good
place for a settlement.

One day, some ships came. The explorers didn’t know if it
was friend or foe; so they decided to hide. But it was only
Sir Francis Drake, an English explorer who had just come
back from an expedition in the Caribbean and was there
to check on the explorers to see how there were doing
and trade with them. When he got there and saw how
starved they were, he decided to give them a good choice.
If they wanted to stay in Roanoke, he would give them a
big supply of food and a boat for everyone to return to
England. If they wanted to come back to England,
he would take them back with him. The didn’t want to
give up. But all of a sudden the weather turned terrible,
and the explorers couldn’t bear to stay anymore.

“Take us home!” they wailed. Drake agreed, and everyone
boarded the ship. In their rush to leave they forgot all about
15 men who had gone exploring. The crew members started
throwing everything overboard to make the boats lighter,
including a string of pearls meant for the queen.

                    CHAPTER 3
                     Simon Says!

When the explorers arrived back in England, Sir Raleigh was
excited to hear that they had found the perfect place to settle.
He made plans for everything. The colonists would board a
ship manned by Simon Fernandez, pick up the 15 men they
had accidentally left behind, and land in the Chesapeake Bay
area to start settling. John White would be the governor.

The day came and they all boarded Simon Fernandez’s ship.
They didn’t like him much, because he always wanted things to
be his way. He refused to pick up the 15 men, and when the
colonists landed on Roanoke (not were they wanted to go!) an
unknown man said they wouldn’t go any further. So there the
colonists were, on this island they hadn’t planned on going to.
All because of Simon Fernandez. What a jerk!! Well, they
decided,we’ll just have to make the best of it.

There, Eleanor Dare had a baby girl who she named Virginia.
But wait, something was wrong. But what? Then it hit them,
like a falling stone. A man named Howe had gone crab fishing
alone. The colonists were worried, because they didn’t know
whether or not the Indians were friendly.

Meanwhile, Howe was having a great time finding crabs. All of
a sudden, some Indians from the woods let their arrows fly on
him. They shot him 16 times, and then beat his head to bits.
When the colonists found his body, they were horrified. They
decided to be extra careful. Soon enough, the colony was
beginning to take shape. But the colonists had no food (Oh-no,
not this again). They needed somebody to go back to England,
and they knew just who to send. Their governor!!

CHAPTER 4
                         The Lost Colony

You might be saying, “WHAT? But John White is their
governor!! They need him!” Well, the colonists didn’t seem to
think so. They were worried he wouldn’t be able to protect or
help them, because he hadn’t protected them from the wrath of
Fernandez.

They told White, but he objected. He wouldn’t leave his
colonists all alone. They finally managed to convince him, but
he made them promise that if they left they would carve their
whereabouts on a tree. The colonists promised and sent him on
his way. Unfortunately, England and Spain were at war; so he
couldn’t get a ship with all the supplies he needed until 3 years
had gone by.

When he finally made it back to Roanoke, nobody was there to
greet him. The island was deserted. He found a post with
“CRO”engraved on it. They kept searching and found a tree
with “CROATOAN” carved into the trunk. White thought that
the colonists must have moved to the island of Croatoan. He
was about to get on his ship to check it out. But the weather
turned bad, and they couldn’t leave.

CONCLUSION
Even now, scientists still don’t know what happened to the
colonists of Roanoke. To answer our question from the
beginning, they were not successful. As for Raleigh, the new
king,King James, was not pleased. He said his colony was a
waste and sent him to the tower of London. There was an
explorer who once found a stone carved with the words:
Virginia Dare died here captif Powhatan 1590 Charlesr. The
explorer was excited and took the stone to an Elizabethan
scholar and showed him the stone. But after a while, they
declared it a hoax. Elizabethans only wrote a certain kind of
way. A certain kind of way the stone was not written in. So, that
helped nothing. Do you think we’ll ever figure it out?
