The American Revolution

Introduction
The American Revolutionary War was known as the American War of Independence and was
a war between Great Britain and the thirteen colonies that wanted independence from
Great Britain.  Over a couple of years, the colonists were becoming more and more upset
with the British rule as they added many rules and taxes on the colonies. The colonists that
wanted independence were called Patriots and those that were loyal to Great Britain were
called Loyalist. The thirteen colonies wanted to be free from Great Britain and call
themselves the United States of America. The war took place from 1775-1783. There were
many battles in these years that led to the United States winning the war. This war was
important to American history because this war allowed the United States to become its own
country and free from Great Britain’s rule.
Prior to the war, the colonists started to rebel from the rules and laws the British were giving
them. One of the most important incidents that occurred was the Boston Tea Party.  In 1773,
colonists protested against a tea tax forced by the British. The colonist dressed up as Indians
and boarded ships with large amounts of tea and threw the boxes of tea into the Boston
Harbor. This event caused great anger between the British and the colonists and led to the
beginning of the American Revolutionary War.
The Battles of Lexington and Concord
Although there were many battles throughout the American revolution, there are some that
are more important than others. The battles that had the most impact on the results of the
American revolution will be mentioned. The first battle that began the American Revolution
was the Battle of Lexington. The British soldiers, the Continental Army and the colonial
militiamen had their first battles in Lexington and Concord in 1775. Paul Revere was an
American patriot who help keep an eye on the British for the Continental Army. Before the
battle of Lexington, he used his knowledge that the British were coming to Lexington to alert
the army and militia so they could be ready to fight. He met with Samuel Adams and
John Hancock who were leading the army and militia men so they could prepare. His ride
was so important that it was called “Paul Revere’s Ride”. The battle was short but soldiers
died on both sides. Consequently, this battle made the problem worse between Great Britain
and the Continental Army and militia. They probably thought this battle would quickly end the
argument but they were wrong.

The next battle was at Concord. At this battle, there was more death especially for the
British.  Britain forces retreated back to Boston. The battle was considered a win for the
Continental army and militia. This was the first winning battle for them in the revolution. This
win maybe made the Continental army want to continue fighting for their freedom.

The Battle of Bunker Hill
The Battle of Bunker Hill later in 1775 was won by the British. However, the British wound up
losing 40 percent of their men during this battle. Even though the British won, the Continental
army was more motivated to continue the war because they had been able to make a huge
impact on the British forces.

Shortly after these battles, George Washington was chosen as the General of the
Continental Army. He was to lead the rebellion of the Continental Army. As a result of George
Washington's command during the war, he was chosen after the war to be the first president
of the United States.

The British went on to win battles in New York and New Jersey following this battle. However,
in Trenton, NJ in December of 1776, the Continental Army finally won a battle and gave the
army motivation to continue to fight and go forward.

The Battle of Saratoga
The Battle of Saratoga was known as the  turning point in the war for the Continental Army.
The British surrendered to the Continental Army at this battle.  The most important thing that
happened was the French then joined the Americans to help give money and soldiers to fight
the war and because of this, the Continental Army had a better chance to win.

The Battle of Yorktown
Finally, in the Battle of Yorktown in 1781, the Continental Army and the French troops waged
a battle against the British. The troops were Led by George Washington and French General
Comte de Rochambeau. The combination of forces led to a final victory for the American and
French troops. General Lord Cornwallis surrendered with his 9,000 troops. In September 1783
the Treaty of Paris ends the war. I think that the Treaty of Paris is important because it
restored the friendship with America and France.

Conclusion

The American Revolution was a war between Great Britain and the Thirteen Colonies. The
British were the most powerful army in that time but the Thirteen Colonies were able to beat
and earn their Independence as the United States of America. There are a few people that
helped America earn its independence in the war and are important to this day for Americans.
A few of those people were George Washington, Samuel Adams, John Hancock, and Paul
Revere. Without these people America may not of won its independence in 1783. The
American Revolution was one of the most important wars in American history because it
allowed us to become the United States of America.
