                    Colonial Life

     Introduction
In colonial times people had barely anything! They had no electricity and no
lights,  and no air conditioning!! Now today we have lights everywhere, people
have 1 or 2 or 3 electronics and many houses have air conditioning. In colonial
times, they did not have a lot of the things we do today.

Jamestown
The colony, named Jamestown is in honor of  King James. The people on three
ships had a goal to find a northwest passage to the far East and to discover gold to
bring back to England. Most of the Jamestown settlers were gentleman who wore
fine clothes and expected to be served by others.  Others were craftsmen. During
Jamestown´s first two years, it became clear that the settlers had to adapt to the
demands of the wilderness -or die! There was no gold and no northwest passage
from Virginia. But there was land for farming, there were forests filled with trees
for lumber and there were plenty of animals for food.  Those settlers who
understood the situation followed the direction of their leader. Captain John
Smith, one of these leaders, worked hard. But many people did not, and times
were hard for them.

   Virginia
Walter Raleigh was Queen Elizabeth’s favorite courtier. He tells her that he had
found the perfect site for the colony she hoped to set up in America.  He sent out
an exploratory mission. Raleigh knows he had to find a site first. In 1583, his
half-brother set out with 260 men, but had no idea where to land.  He drowned at
sea. Paradise found the men Raleigh sent to find America and they described it as
a paradise. Ripe grapes grow wild and the natives are friendly.  Raleigh had a
fleet of seven ships to take his colonists across the Atlantic Ocean. He did not go
himself, but put two tough, experienced commanders in charge.

What did people eat ?
People ate CORN!  Boiled corn and roasted corn.  Corn ground into cornmeal
and baked into corn cake and corn pudding,  The Indians taught the people how to
plant corn and how to cook corn. But there were other things for the colonists to
eat too.  Like pumpkins and squash and they learned to plant them the Indian
way. There were no grocery stores and no places to get food, everything had to be
hunted or grown.

What happened on Sundays?
On Sundays the colonists would got to church.Thy had to go to
church in the morning,  They would wake up and go straight to church.  The
church was called the meeting house. They went to church for 4 HOURS!
Everybody had to go, babies too. But babies were too little to sit up straight on the
wooden benches so they had special place in the meeting house. They were put in a
wooden cages, like playpens, where they could lie down only on Sundays.

What happened if you didn't  behave in school?
If  you didn't know your lessons , you were called a dunce and you would sit on a
dunce stool and wear leather eyeglass frames.  If you whispered to a friend , you’d
have to wear wooden whispering sticks in your mouth. If you didn't pay attention
to the schoolmaster, you had to wear a card around your neck that said ´´idle boy”.
If you were caught biting your nails, you had to wear a card that said ‘’Bite Finger
Baby’. ’

What did girls like to do?
Colonial girls played mostly with dolls.  Their dolls were made of rags and
cornhusks.  Some girls had wood dolls, but these dolls were not for playthings,
they were really fashion dolls. Girls also sewed letters. With tiny stitches, they
made birds and trees and flowers  and the letters of the alphabet.

What games did boys like?
Boys liked to play ball, they played with a leather ball filled with ++++feathers.
The boys had toy tops to spin , and drums to bang, popguns to pop, they had hoops
to roll, marbles to shoot, kites to fly, they had trees to climb and icy ponds to skate
on.

Did children have any time to play?
No matter how hard the children worked they always had time to play.  They
didn't have much time to play as we kids do today. They played some games we
play today like London bridge is falling down and they sang some songs.

Who learned more - girls or boys?
After Dame school, boys went to another school to learn more and the girls got to
stay home and help their moms. Girls knew how to spin and cook and how to clean
the house.  The law said boys had to go to school, that was the law but some boys
didn't.

What did the school look like?
The schools were NOT comfortable, well most of them weren't.  They had hard
benches to sit on. The school had ONE room and it was freezing cold in the winter!
The only heat was coming from the fireplace! Every boy had to bring wood, if you
didn't you would sit in the far back where there was no heat.

Did big families live in big houses?

Fun fact
My Grandma and Grandpa live in a saltbox house, but a modern one!

Conclusion
Life was much harder and very different in the colonial days without modern day
things including electronics.  I hope you had fun time learning about colonial
times.BYE!
