Jack,
The Caddy

It was a hot summer day when Jack and his dad were sitting on the
back porch.  They were discussing that Jack wanted to play tennis
because his grandfather was a professional tennis player. He was
proud of his grandfather.

¨I am so sorry Jack.  We don’t have any money because we spent it
on our house, and we don’t have any extra money for tennis,’’ Dad
explained. “How about you get a job as a caddy at the golf course I
know of and earn the money?”

“ Dad, that is a great idea! But where can I caddy?”

“ I have a friend that is a member at the Country Club of Waterbury.
Maybe you could caddy there.”

All of a sudden, the dad got a call from his buddy, Johnny, who is a
member at the country club. Johnny asked Dad, “Would you like to be
my guest for the member guest at the country club?’’

“I would love to but I don’t have any clubs,” responded Jack's dad.
“And we don't have a caddy.”

“Do you have a child?” asked Johnny.

“Yes, I do,” Jack’s dad said.

Johnny asked, “Does he want to be a caddy for us?’’

“Please Dad. Please can I be a caddy for you guys?’’ responded
Jack.

‘’I guess so, Son. What about my clubs? I don't have any’’, said
Jack’s dad.

’’We'll take care of that,” said Johnny.

“Woohoo! I'm a caddy!’’ yelled Jack.

“When does it start, and what time?’’ said Dad excitedly.

“It starts next week on Sunday at 3:00.’’

“Great!  Jack and I will be there Sunday at 3:00.  We’re looking
forward to it.’’

As they arrived at the club, Dad said, “Jack, there are so many golf
carts. There are hundreds of them.”

Jack’s eyes widened as he was looking at the huge country club.

“Wow! This is the coolest thing I have ever seen in my life!!!’’
responded Jack, staring at all the golf carts.
“Pretty cool, right,’’ responded Jack’s dad.

Jack entered the pro shop to get his bib and a towel to clean the
clubs.  Jack's dad and Johnny teed off. Jack's dad hit an amazing
shot right to the fairway and his partner, Johnny hit a awesome shot
just 5 feet after Jack's dad shot.  Jack’s dad and Johnny won the hole
because their two opponents double bogied on the hole. Austin and
Johnny won all the holes until the 7th hole, which was the worst hole
for them.  Jack made a big mistake by making the wrong call. He was
in the middle of the fairway when the ball went right off the green and
into the road.

Johnny and Jack’s dad did not find the ball. They had looked in the
woods all around the fairway.

They asked Jack, “Where's the ball?”

Jack froze as they asked him the question.  “I saw it, but then it
disappeared into the clouds.  I don’t know where it is but I
accidentally called it in instead of out.”

They were so far away from the tee that they had to drive all the way
back to the tee. That day they fired  Jack. He had to write an apology
letter. They said if you write a great apology letter, you can caddy for
us for the rest of the tournament.

Jack went home that day. He wrote a 5 page apology letter. He
brought it to his dad and Johnny the next day. They read it, and it was
the best apology letter they ever read!!! They agreed that Jack could
be a caddy for the last the 5 days of the tournament.

They won the rest of the 11 holes. They were first in their flight.  They
had 4 more days left. Jack made all the right calls for the three days.
On the 4th day,  Jack, Johnny and his dad were killing it. They were
in 2nd place in the whole member-guest because they lost on the 9th
hole.

They realized they were playing against the team that was in first
place.

“They kept switching off. They won. We won. They won. We won. On
the 17th hole, we won,” Jack said to himself as he was walking to the
18th hole. “If  they win the 18th hole, we will lose the member-guest.
If we win the 18th hole, we will win the member-guest tournament.”

Jack’s dad and Johnny were all tied up until the putting.  Johnny
made it in in one. It was all up to his dad. He missed the first putt.
The other guy got it in. It was between his dad and his opponent.

“Come on Dad,” said Jack.

If his dad made it in, then they would win the member-guest! The ball
curved around the hole then it went into a toilet.  Then it was so close
to the hole...and it missed. If the other guy made it in then they would
win the member-guest! He putted, and it almost made it in, but it
turned around and came back since the putting green was downhill.

Jack’s dad went for the putt. It was going straight to the hole.
Everyone started whispering, “It went into the hole”, and everyone
started shouting!!!

But they forgot that they were winning by one point!!! If their
opponents made it in, they would win. The  person on the other team
hit the ball. It kept going around, and it did not go in the hole!!! Johnny
and Jack’s dad won the member-guest!!!!!!!

The crowd cheered!!! They jumped up and down.
They belly bumped!!! They went up to the secret
room where only the people who won go to get their trophy and
awards!!! They went to the bar to celebrate. Jack got $1,250.  He was
so happy he shouted, “NOW I CAN DO TENNIS!”

When he got home he jumped out of the car, closed the door and ran
straight to the house.  When he got inside he surprised his mom by
saying, “Mom, Mom look what I got from Dad's partner!”

“Whoa how much money is that?” asked Jack's mom.

“I think it's $1,250.”

“Well, what are you going to do with all that money?” whispered
Jack's mom.

“I'm going to spend it on tennis!” screamed Jack as he was running
around the house.
“Calm down, Honey,’’ said his mom.

After that very long day, Jack had a good night’s sleep.
