The Other Side,
a Story of Differences

A while ago it was really hard to make friends with someone
whose skin color was different. You could not be with them. It
was called segregation. This was a thing until Dr. Martin Luther
King Jr changed it. Now imagine you and your best friend could
not be friends because you are different. Well this is what
happened for Annie and Clover from The Other Side.

It was hard for them to make friends.  My reasons are, Clover
and Annie couldn’t be friends because of segregation, Clover and
Annie kept trying to be friends, and most of all, no one wanted to
be friends with Annie except for Clover.

One reason that Clover and Annie couldn’t be friends is because
of segregation. They were not allowed to be together. Both of
Clover and Annie’s moms said not to go over the fence. When
they first met, they both said that. Clover’s mom did not let her
go outside because Annie was there. Mama said it wasn’t safe for
black people to be together with white people.  ‘And Mama said,
“Don’t climb over the fence when you play.’” Annie's mom did too.

Another reason is, Clover and Annie kept trying to be friends, but
it was hard.  For example Clover asked Annie to play jump rope,
but Sandra would always disagree. They were trying to talk on the
fence, and they became friends but it was still hard. When they
were talking on the fence they smiled. It says in the book, “ We
stood there smiling at each other.”  This helps the thesis because
it shows how and when they started to become friends.

Although it is hard for Clover and Annie to make friends, because
of segregation and because Clover and Annie kept trying to be
friends, it is especially true that it is hard to make friends
because no one wanted to be friends with Annie except Clover.
For example, Annie and Clover asked to play but Sandra said, “I
don’t care”. Annie asked to play but Clover’s friend disagreed.
Mama did not let Clover play with Annie. Annie’s mom said not to
play with Clover. In the book it says, “ My mama says I shouldn't
go on the other side, “ I said. “My mama says the same thing.”

So I hope you learned how hard it was for Clover and Annie to be
friends. Just remember this was a real thing, a big percentage of
blacks and whites were treated differently. The differences of
people made them unique.
