Introduction

You hear screaming and yelling and you don’t know what to do! You look
back and forth, and you just see people dumping chests of tea into the
harbor. You see the water turning brown! What is happening?!
The Boston Tea Party was a protest against the British governments
passing of the Tea act, in 1773. The Boston Tea Party occurred on
December 16th, 1773. A group of men, known as the Sons of Liberty,
dressed as Native Americans, boarded 3 ships carrying chests of loose
tea. They threw all the chests of tea overboard into the Boston Harbor.

Why Did It Start?
People in the 1770s loved to drink tea. King George III sold tea to the
colonists at a low price but then imposed really high taxes on that tea,
which angered them. The colonists didn’t like the high taxes on tea, so
some people stopped buying tea or they drank it rarely. In fact, some
people even stopped drinking it once and for all because of the taxes,
and because they also couldn’t afford it anymore. But remember, not
everyone stopped drinking tea. Some people still did until they found out
that the king was smuggling it in from other countries and putting even
higher taxes on the tea. They were also upset because the British
Parliament created the Tea Act without input from the American colonists.
They felt that they had no say in the matter. They protested by saying “No
taxation without representation.” Then everyone stopped drinking tea
once and for all.
What Happend at the Boston Tea Party?
You might think the Boston Tea Party was an actual tea party, but  it was
really a protest against the taxes on tea. Colonists disguised as Native
Americans boarded 3 ships, The Dartmouth, The Eleanor and the Beaver
which had sailed from Britain into the Boston Harbor.  They proceeded to
throw all the chests of tea overboard. It took only 4 hours to dump 342
chests of loose tea into the harbor. The group of men were called the
Sons of Liberty. They wore disguises so that they wouldn’t get caught and
be punished. They thought of themselves as patriots. Samuel Adams and
John Hancock were some of the famous ones. Some people didn’t wear
disguises and got caught and were arrested. They had to face some
pretty severe punishments. It was definitely not safe at the Boston Tea
Party and they didn’t even drink a single sip of tea!

What Happened after the Boston Tea Party?

After the Boston Tea party, it was all over the newspapers. They had to
close the Boston harbor. The harbor looked like a big cup of tea! Some
people like John Adams were thrilled about this, but others were not. The
harbor had to be closed until all of the tea was paid for. Because of the
Boston Tea Party, I imagine that some of the animals and fish in the
harbor probably died because the water was contaminated with all of the
tea. But the tea dumping did not stop there….a second Boston Tea Party
happened again in 1774!

The Intolerable Acts
One of the things that happened soon after the Boston tea Party was over
were the Intolerable acts. The king was so mad about all the tea being
dumped that he wanted to punish the colonists. He did this because of all
the money that it cost to clean up the Boston Harbor. So he made
Parliament pass 5 new harsh laws as the punishment. This happened
between March and June of 1774.
One of the laws that the parliament made was to close the port to the
Boston harbor. This was a big deal because people got supplies from
other countries that were brought in by ships into the harbor. This blocked
that any access for them to come in.  Remember there were no planes or
cars back then, just ships so this was the only way of transportation.
Another law that parliament made was, that they ended free elections and
ended the Massachusetts Constitution. To the colonists this was not fair.
Also, a law was  made that forced the colonists to allow British troops to
use there homes on demand if needed. This was incredibly unfair to the
colonists. In addition, another law was created to extend freedom of
worship to French-Canadian Catholics under British rule which made the
colonists that protested very angry. Finally, a really strict law was made
which created martial law in Massachusetts. These laws were so the
harsh that people just weren't capable of following them and so they were
punished.  Some of these punishments were really severe. For example,
they poured hot tar on you and rolled you in bird feathers. All the
punishments of the intolerable acts were so cruel and terrible. I know I
wouldn't want have wanted to be a part of the intolerable acts!

The 2nd Boston Tea Party
You probably didn’t know that there was a 2nd Boston Tea Party. The
second one consisted of about 60 people who lived in Boston. They
boarded a ship in March 1774 and dumped nearly 30 chests of tea into
the harbor. The second Boston Tea Party wasn’t nearly as bad as the first
one but it did encourage Maryland, New York, and South Carolina to start
dumping tea into oceans, lakes, and rivers as well.

Conclusion
The Boston Tea Party was an important event in the history of the
American Colonies. It was the first time that the colonists stood up and
protested against the British Parliament about being taxed and treated
unfairly. “No taxation without representation” was their battle cry. They
stood up for their rights. It took only a few people to stand up for what
they believed in to start a very important protest. In fact, The Boston Tea
Party was the first time that the colonists spoke out for their freedom and
it was one of the major events that led to the beginning of the American
Revolution.
