Rainbow Fish Essay

In the book the Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister, Rainbow Fish doesn't
understand why the other fish won't play with him.  Rainbow Fish
changes for the better. He went from being selfish to being selfless.

In the beginning of the story, Rainbow Fish is selfish because he won’t
give one little shimmering scale to the Little Blue Fish.  In the text it
said “You want me to give you one of my special scales? Who do you
think you are cried the Rainbow fish. Get away from me.  himself and
won't give any scales to the Little Blue Fish.

In the middle of the story, Rainbow Fish changes because he got great
advice from the Wise Octopus and makes himself change by getting
that advice and taking that advice to give to himself so he can give
that one little shimmering scale to the Little Blue Fish.  In the text it
said”I can't… the Rainbow Fish started to say, but the octopus had
already disappeared into a dark cloud of ink. Give away my scales?
My beautiful shining scales? Never. How could I ever be happy
without them? This shows Rainbow Fish is starting to change because
he still wants to keep all his scales to himself but he wants to
discover true happiness again.  So he can not be lonely and have his
friends back. He is thinking about sharing.

At the end of the story, Rainbow Fish is selfless because he gave the
Little Blue Fish a scale and that was all the Little Blue Fish wished for.
In the text it said “The Rainbow Fish shared his scales left and right.
And the more he gave away, the more delighted he became. When
the water around him filled with glittering scales, he at last felt at
home among the other fish.  Finally the Rainbow Fish had only one
shining scale left.” This shows Rainbow Fish is selfless because he
wanted to have friends again and he was very nice to the Little Blue
Fish. He was so selfless and that made the little blue fish tell the
other fish that he got a glittering scale from Rainbow Fish.

These are all reasons that show how Rainbow Fish starts as selfish
and then becomes selfless.  In this book the lesson learned was it's
not what’s on the outside that matters it's what's on the inside that
counts.
