Colonial Times

Introduction
Did you know that in colonial days children drank beer,
they even drank it for breakfast! What were the
opinions on the pro-British side? What were the
opinions on the pro-american side? These questions
will be answered in this report. Some other things you
will read about in this report is Gold. Why was gold so
popular, and was it really worth going to a foreign
country having no idea if there was gold there or not?
The final subject that you will learn about is tobacco.
Tobacco was Virginia's most successful cash crop. Did
you know it was used to purchase slaves. I hope you
enjoy this fact filled report on colonial times.

Obey the king!
There were a few sides on the Pro-British side. There
were loyalists, who remained loyal to the king.
Another opinion was redcoats, which was the name of
the British soldiers. Lobsterback was a derogatory
name for British soldiers, and Tory was the name of
the political party that remained loyal to the king.
When the colonists came to America, most were
loyalists, but eventually, some of them decided to not
be loyal to the king. It must have been tough for
them, living close to people who had a totally different
opinion, and were at war with them. All of these sides
are opinions, but they all have thing in common. They
all were loyal to the king!

Chapter 1: Sides

We want freedom!!
There were five pro-american sides. There were
patriots, the name of a American soldier. A second
opinion was  Whigs, the name of a political party that
demanded freedom. A few more opinions on the
pro-American side were rebels, who went against
British authority, continentals, soldiers that are part
of the continental army, and  Minutemen, volunteered
Patriots who were ready in an instant. The volunteered
Patriots must have thought that it was unfair, them
going risking their life so their country would be free
without getting paid. They must have wanted to
protest so they would get paid but decided against it.

Chapter 2: Things

One reason I came to this foreign country, GOLD!
Gold was one of the main reasons colonists came to
America. European powers measured their wealth and
power in gold and silver. Mexico was a major source of
gold. By 1540, Mexico gold mines were exhausted.
Gold was so popular back then because gold had a big
value, and they had to pay all the taxes that were put
on them by the British king. Spaniards and French
people had a very hard time finding gold. The search
for gold in the early 1500s was not a complete failure,
explorers found a lot of geographical information on
America, which helped establish new colonies in
America. The seven cities of cibola attracted
explorers. Pirates targeted Spanish ships with gold.
Gold’s value in 1775 was around $20 per ounce, which
is $20 less than today's value, but back then USD
was just created and had a much bigger value than
today’s money. So, with $20 in 1775, it would be worth
around $60 per ounce in today’s money. Were the
colonists willing to take the risk of not finding any gold?

Tobacco
Tobacco was Virginia’s gold. Probably after a while
people forgot about it. Black people could not smoke
tobacco. Some things were paid for in tobacco.
John Rolfe was the person who found a way to cure
tobacco. Indian tobacco was bitter and tough. Planned
projects for silk-, glass-, and wine-making feel apart
to make room for planting tobacco. Could it be that
the people back then didn't know smoking tobacco is
bad for your health? Tobacco itself become money.
Taxes were paid for with tobacco. Some peoples
salary was tobacco. Some people bought slaves with
tobacco. A modern hogshead of tobacco weighs
750-800 pounds. A hogshead is 5 feet in diameter.

Conclusion
In the end I can say that colonists came into America
having wild imaginations about what they thought it
was like, but when they arrived they saw it was totally
different than how they imagined it. The colonial
times was a very rough time. Many people had
different opinions, and were living next to each other,
while simultaneously being at war with each other.
Gold was a big reason colonists came to this New
World. After colonists had arrived to Virginia in
America, tobacco became very popular. I feel like
these colonists were the base of America, and we
wouldn’t be what we are now without them. Is the
determination of colonists in colonial times still with
Americans today?
