The Other Side
Book by: Jacqueline Woodson

In the book The Other Side, I think the lesson in this book is
that Annie was very determined to play with Clover even
though she is different. Annie went to the fence everyday to
play with Clover. Even though Annie and Clover were
different that didn't stop her from being friends with her.
And when Annie asked to play jump rope with Clover and
her friends and Clover’s friends said no. Read more to find
out about the big idea of The Other Side.
In the book The Other Side the big idea is that Annie was
very determined to play with Clover even though she is
different. One reason is Annie went to the fence everyday
wanting to play with Clover.  Things were segregated &
Annie & Clover weren't supposed to play with each other
because that was a rule at this time in the book. Both of
their moms were against them going to the big fence because
their moms didn’t want Clover and Annie to get in trouble.
But, Annie goes to the fence because rules didn’t stop her to
play with Clover. Clover and Annie’s mom told them “don’t
climb over the fence.” & they also said “it wasn’t safe.”
And even though Annie and Clover are different, that didn’t
stop Annie to become friends. Annie and Clover were VERY
different from each other because lived on 1 side of the fence
were people have to same skin color as her and Annie lived on
the other side of the fence were people have the same skin as
her. They both didn’t care that the rule is that they were
segregated. They played with each other even though they
weren’t supposed to play with each other because nothing
stopped them from being friends even though the look different.
Annie doesn’t care that Clover looks different. Annie goes to
the fence a lot and she forgets that Clover is different.
Once when Clover & her friends were outside playing with
the jump rope and Annie went on the fence & asked if she
could play with them Clover’s friends said no because they
follow the rule but Clover didn’t know what to say so she
didn’t say anything. But Annie still can back on fence. When
she asked to play and they said no happened she came back
to the fence when Clover’s friends weren’t there. Annie came
back to the fence because she didn’t care that Clover was
different. Annie also plays outside even when Clover isn’t
outside. I think she does this because she REALLY wants to
be friends with Clover. She even comes out in the rain.

In conclusion, this is why I think Annie was VERY determined
to play with Clover even though they are different. Annie went to
the fence everyday waiting for Clover to come outside. Even
though clover and Annie are different that didn’t stop her from
being her friend. And when Annie asked if she can play with
Clover and her friends Clovers friends said no. But Annie still
went to the fence. That is why I think the big idea in the other
side is Annie was VERY determined to play with Clover even
though she is different.
