Roanoke Island
Introduction
It started off with when America was still a newfoundland,
and every country wanted a piece of it. Like the Spanish,
they grabbing it as fast they could. English sails were there
too, chasing the Spanish ships, although the English were
not ready to sail yet, they wanted the treasure that the
Spanish were finding. In this story you will find out new
things like how England found Roanoke the lost colony.

First group
It started off when England was a small nation that wanted
to expand its trade. European nations such as France and
Spain, had already sent explorer across the Atlantic Ocean
to chart America and discover new things. As you saw in

husband because then she would need to give all her power
to her husband, (And the tradition lives on because
Queen Elizabeth II does not want to marry so she doesn't
have to give up her power) but Queen Elizabeth did want to
have a chance at piece of the new world. This mysterious
place was said to offer valuable resources and riches such as
gold, silvers, and fur. An adventurer named Sir Walter
Raleigh was ready to take on the challenge of exploring and
settling the new world for England. He funded the
expeditions that explored and built a settlement on
Roanoke Island. I mean wouldn’t you think that the queen
should have at least come to what he was doing, but luckily
she did not, and she even know what Roanoke looked like
what if she did not like what she was seeing or he did not
find anything and just died, and how the queen know if he
died or not, I mean this was 1580, so there was no phones or
walkie talkies or computers ( unlike today ) So there was no
way to communicate with each other. How did they do it, let's
find out. Roanoke is off the coast of what is now
North Carolina. Raleigh received a royal patent that said he
could settle land for England. After exploring the East Coast
of North America, they claimed a part of it for England. So
they did do it, yay, now, I know what you might be thinking,
in the introduction it said the word lost colony was that all
because it did not say anything about the lost colony. Well
read the story on the second group and you will see the lost
colony of Roanoke mystery.

Second group
You might think that the second group to arrive on Roanoke
were nice like the first group, but actually they were nothing
like the first group. The second group to arrive on Roanoke
was on a scientific and military mission.
There were 108 men on the this trip, led, by Sir Richard
Grenville and colonel Ralph Lane. The group arrived on
July 3, 1585 to study the available resources, Grenville
returned to England the main land near Roanoke Island.
They recorded what they saw, and an artist named John
White painted pictures of unfamiliar plants and animals,
as well as Native American and their homes, villages, and
ways of life. Unlike the first group, the second group of
Englishmen did not get along with Natives. The Natives
died from illness the English brought, which caused tension.
The English burned a village and killed a Roanoke Indian
leader. They were in lack of supplies so its governor,
John White, left the colony soon after to return to England

for supplies. He was delayed in England by the Anglo-Spanish
war. When white returned to Roanoke in 1590, the colonists
had disappeared, including his daughter and granddaughter.
The only clue to their whereabouts was the word Croatoan,
the name of a local Native American tribe and an island,
carved into a tree. Well now did you read about the lost

Investigating Roanoke
Scientists have been digging up the grounds of Roanoke
trying to find either if they went to live underground or if
they find skeletons of the people who lived in Roanoke.
Today archaeologists have new technology to uncover
history's mysteries (unlike back then). In 2012, scientists
looked at a map by John White and noticed there was a
patch on it. Using special lights, they found a symbol
underneath that might have stood for a fort. The fort
would have been 50 miles (80 km) away, in an area near
the small tribal town of Mettaquem. Archaeologists traveled
to that location to use ground-penetrating radar (GPR).
GPR sends radio waves into the ground, where they bounce
off objects. Archaeologists found a buried structure and a
fence, meaning colonists could have been there. However,
more research will have to be done because it’s not clear
what the buildings were, when they were made, or who
made them.

Stories and theories
Today no one knows what happened to the colonists.
There are theories and stories about what happened to the
colonists. It could have been a disease they died from such a
s Malaria. Others believe the colonists left Roanoke for a
new place. A major theories was that the colonists abandoned
Roanoke and traveled to Croatoan Island. One legend tell the
fictional story of what happened to Virginia Dare. Legend
has it that Natives attacked the Roanoke Colony, but the
Croatoan tribe saved Virginia Dare. She was raised in a tribe,
but a medicine man turned her into a white deer. That is why
sometime people call her the “White Doe.” Which one do you
believe in. Now here are some facts that I either already said
or things you didn't know.

Conclusion
Well that was the story of the lost Colony of Roanoke. So
mysterious. Now you what might have happened to the lost
colony. You can do your own research but you will not find
the lost colony of Roanoke mystery solved. As you saw there
are a couple of outcomes but no one has solved the mystery.
Well the point of this report is to teach you about the lost
colony of Roanoke, well did you learn anything, like how
the lost colony came to be or when it happened or what
happened. If only John White had searched more or went
to the Croatoan island or searched for the Croatoan tribe
then the mystery would have 50-50 chance for the mystery
to be solved. Maybe one day you will find out the Roanoke
mystery. But, what do you think happened?
