Chapter 1:
The boys wore bright colored clothes. They
wore stockings and caps. The colored dyes
used came from flowers, berries and roots
that the children gathered. Girls kept their
hair covered with hats or hoods. Boys had
long hair. Men wore wigs.

The homes had one room called the keeping
room. They burned big logs to keep the
house warm. The older children slept in the
attic. Their beds were sacks stuffed with rags
and hay.

Chapter 2:
The first school that boys and girls went to
was called Dame School. The children went
to their teacher’s house. They learned to read
and write. After Dame School, the boys went
on to another school while the girls stayed
home. The school only had one room with a
fireplace and hard benches to sit on. Every
boy had to bring in firewood. If he forgot, he
had to sit far away from the fire where the
room was the coldest. The families had to
pay for their boys to go to school, often with
food. If the boys did not know how to do their
schoolwork, they had to wear a dunce cap.

Chapter 3:
Boys worked before school after school and
at night. Before school, children had to feed
the chickens, collect eggs, clean the coop,
and milk the cows. School was out at 12:00.
The children went home and had dinner with
their families. Then they had chores until it
was time to sleep. Boys often worked with
their fathers, whether they were farmers
working in the field or Blacksmiths or
woodworkers working late into the night.
Although children did not have too much time
to play, when they played the same games
you play today. They played ball and bowling.
The balls they used were made of leather and
stuffed with feathers. They also played tag,
hoops and quoits. Quoits was a game of ring
toss.
